The Aircraft Manufacturers were among the first customers to recognize the possibilities offered by computer based cutting. The first four electronic stencil cutters we sold were installed to produce marking for tooling, jigs and fixtures for aircraft parts. The ability to produce any size characters with graphics in a single machine offered many benefits. Soon after installation it was learned that stencil characters could be cut in vinyl and applied directly to the tooling. Since vinyl can withstand temperatures in excess of 350°F, it makes an excellent marking material. By applying vinyl directly, no ink or solvent based sprays were needed, thus saving on hazardous waste handling and protection equipment. One such manufacturer has calculated a savings of over $1,000,000.00, quite a return on investment. Military Contractors must live with the burden of providing contract approved marking for both products and shipping containers going to the U.S. and Foreign customers. For many of these contractors this means Stencils, a time proven marking method preferred by all militaries. One of our customers had to provide up to seventeen lines of text in 1/2" characters for each shipping container. Using a mechanical machine an operator required a minimum of 40 minutes to produce such a stencil, assuming that they made no mistakes. If a mistake was made, it meant starting from scratch, since mechanical machines don't "store" anything. Installing a BREN Automated Stencil Cutter reduced the job to less than 5 minutes, allowed stencils to be stored and recalled from the computer and virtually eliminated mistakes since the stencil can be viewed on screen before it is cut. Because a BREN cutter functions automatically, while a stencil is being cut an operator can be doing other jobs. The total value received from the system is hard to calculate, much of the saved labor time is used for increased productivity and the ease with which stencils can be produced means they are now used where hand written labels were once the norm. No matter how you calculate it, the BREN system paid for itself in less than four months and is now making money for the customer by having reduced the cost of manufacturing.
